Info on workarounds for Windows Update Genuine Advantage verification
Admin :: Although I love the amount of hits this post is generating, I’m locking it, and will remove it shortly. Apologies to one and all, but seeking out hacks to commercial software is not what this site is about. Cheers.

Microsoft “Genuine Advantage” cracked in 24h: window.g_sDisableWGACheck=’all’
AV sez, “This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called ‘Genuine Advantage.’ It was cracked within 24 hours.”
Before pressing ‘Custom’ or ‘Express’ buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck=’all’)
It turns off the trigger for the key check.

Microsoft blocks pirated copies from Windows updates - Comments (61)

** UPDATE **
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/07/28/microsoft_genuine_ad.html
Has presented a fix for this.
Also one of our forum users posted a even easier fix:
1. Open IE
2. Click on Tools
3. Click on Internet options
4. Click to the Programs tab
5. Click on the Manage Add-ons button.
6. Select Windows Genuine Advantage
7. Click Disable
8. Done, now you can do Windows updates again.
Microsoft has now offically started blocking pirated copies of Windows from using the Windows Update feature. With the latest Windows update it forces a new installer and new validation tool, once this is installed, when you try to do a Windows update again, you get the message ” [ Support ID: 0x8DDD1003 ] To get updates, you must first validate your Windows software. Validation assures that you are using an authentic and fully licensed copy of Windows.”
Now I don’t know the figures, but I’d assume there are probably more pirated copies of Windows out there then there are legit, specifically in Asian countries like China. So now we have a very unsecure Operating System that constantly needs updates/fixes to prevent millions of computers from being taken over by viruses/worms, that can no longer update. I’m sure those kiddies who run botnets are happy.
Good job Microsoft. ![]()
Man alive, I can’t believe that it could be so simple. How could they have missed something like that? To be able to turn it off through IE, or to enter some javascript. Crazy. CARAZY.
Windows … done.
Googlindows … the way.
Ha ha. I don’t think so … but it’s fun to think about.

This is interesting when read in conjunction with the article on 13th - Developers should be liable for security holes.

It may of changed since and also I think these instructions were designed to stop you having to get gen. advantage, once you have already accepted it that may be a different story. There are other solutions too but since I own Win XP I have given up and now let MS violate me and my computer on a regular basis!

you say disable gen.adv’ in “manage addons”, but it is greyed out, how can i disable this.
thanks in advance, martin
